Bainbridge divers compete in championships

The Bainbridge Island Diving Club traveled to Beaverton, Ore. on March 8-10 to compete in the 2013 Spring Junior Olympic Region 10 Championships.

The Bainbridge Island Diving Club traveled to Beaverton, Ore. on March 8-10 to compete in the 2013 Spring Junior Olympic Region 10 Championships.

The championships featured 163 competitors on teams from Alaska, California, Idaho, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington.

Cammy Rouser of Kingston started it off on Saturday diving in the girls 14-15 3-meter springboard event. She scored 202.6 points using eight dives to place 27th out of 32 competitors. She came back on Sunday in the 1-meter event and improved her ranking to 21st out of 35 divers and scored 224.95 with eight dives.

Teammate Zora Opalka of Bainbridge Island competed in her first Junior Olympic event on Sunday, also in the girls 14-15 age group. She scored 163.30 using eight dives and finished in 34th place.

The next competition for the team is a home meet at the Don Nakata Pool in the Bainbridge Aquatics Center on the morning of April 13. The public is welcome.
