Wicca exhibit up at library
An exhibit about the past, present and future of the houseboat Wicca and people who have lived aboard vessels moored at Eagle Harbor is now on display in the lobby of the Bainbridge Library.
The exhibit includes Wicca materials, photographs, paintings and information about owners and people who lived aboard the vessel.
The city took possession of Wicca in February following a code violation, then had the houseboat towed to the Caicos yard in Port Gamble in March. There its float was removed and its cabin was placed on shore.
Wicca was supposed to be stored for 30 days while citizens interested in saving it made proposals for its renovation, but that period was later extended to 60 days.
The city had set June 27 as the deadline for Wicca’s demolition, but it was granted another reprieve following public comment at a city council meeting.
Tribal canoes to paddle past
Native American voyaging canoes – powered by tribes and groups from Puget Sound – are expected to depart Alki Point sometime on the morning of July 19.
They will pass Fay Bainbridge State Park and round Point Monroe, Agate Point and come ashore in Ol’ Man House Park in Suquamish sometime before noon.
The Suquamish community will host a lunch for the group. The canoes will leave Suquamish for Port Gamble the next morning, with their goal of reach Duncan, B.C., on July 28.
This is expected to be a smaller group than the one next year that is scheduled to canoe from British Columbia and Washington ports to Suquamish.

CRC meets Thursday
Beginning this week, the City Council’s Community Relations Committee meetings will be moved to a new day and time.
The CRC, which typically met on Mondays as needed, will now meet from 1:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursdays at City Hall. The change will last through August, Chair Hilary Franz said.
On the agenda for tomorrow’s meeting are work on the city’s fire code, as well as discussion of the fireworks ordinance, a proposed mandatory recycling ordinance, the Public Art Committee’s Creative Grounds project and the possible preservation of the houseboat Wicca.
Not too late for your estate
Next week, the Bainbridge Public Library will begin its seventh annual Retirement and Estate Planning series, which runs monthly through the fall.
The six planned programs, all free, cover a range of basic planning issues of importance to adults with families, or to those with an estate to protect.
This month’s program, to be held at 9 a.m. July 22, will include a series overview and information about advance health-care planning and long-term care decisions.
