The Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra will present Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11 at Bainbridge Performing Arts.

Maestro Wesley Schulz launches the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra’s 40th anniversary season with “Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony,” featuring works by Copland, Tchaikovsky, and Berlioz, with Sarah Mattox, mezzo soprano.

One of Tchaikovsky’s most endearing gifts was his penchant for melody. His Fifth Symphony is a virtual bounty of intoxicating themes including the second movement’s famous melody for French Horn.

Berlioz’s six songs for mezzo soprano, Les nuits d’ete (Summer Nights), radiate tenderness, sensuality, and like Tchaikovsky, gives voice to inspired melodies. Aaron Copland’s Outdoor Overture opens the program with spirited brass playing an invigorating rhythm.
