The city of Bainbridge Island is now accepting applications for residents who want to enroll in the Bainbridge Island Police Citizen’s Academy.

People who are curious about law enforcement can apply for a spot in the academy — a free, 10-week program that covers topics ranging from traffic enforcement and criminal law to defensive tactics and investigations.

Local instructors will be joined by experts from other agencies in Kitsap County in leading the classes.

The 2012 fall program begins Tuesday, Sept. 11 and runs through Tuesday, Nov. 13. Classes are held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday nights with two optional Saturday sessions.

“The program was started to assist our citizens in understanding what law enforcement officers do,” said Bainbridge Police Commander Sue Shultz. “We want to give folks a chance to see different aspects of public safety, and the opportunity to better understand the department’s decision-making processes and the types of challenges we face daily.”

“The academy gives participants the opportunity to ride along with an on-duty patrol officer, tour the 911 dispatch center, the county coroner’s office and the Kitsap County Jail,” Shultz added.

Participants may also be given the option of being future volunteers for the department.

“This is a great opportunity for people to get to know the Bainbridge Island Police Department’s officers and staff on a more personal level and for the department to create connections within the community they serve,” said Officer Carla Sias, the class coordinator.

Applicants must be 18 years old, willing to make an eight-week commitment, and are subject to a criminal background check.  Applications are available on the city’s website or in person from the police department and will be accepted until Aug. 15.  Class size is limited to 20 participants.

Another academy will be held in early 2013.
