Islanders who want to learn more about law enforcement can apply for the 2016 Citizens’ Police Academy, a free, hands-on learning experience with the Bainbridge Island Police Department.

The academy, offered just once a year, will run from Feb. 3 through April 6.

“The program was started to give citizens insight into what officers do while on patrol,” explained Bainbridge Police Chief Matthew Hamner.

“It’s a great experience, as students get to experience quite a bit behind the scenes and also have the opportunity to get acquainted with some of the officers who serve them,” he said.

Doug Hansmann, an academy graduate, agreed. He attended the course with his wife, Nancy, in 2011.

“We thoroughly enjoyed each lecture which introduced us to the surprisingly broad spectrum of capabilities and activities,” he said.

“These included everything from Internet fraud, to elder abuse, to criminal investigation techniques and forensic chemistry. My personal favorite field trips were the hands-on firearm practice in the pistol range and the tour of the Kitsap County Jail.

“Each week you will be introduced to new topics and new speakers. You will finish the course with a new appreciation and respect for our police department,” Hansmann added.

The academy helps residents learn how the Bainbridge Island Police Department functions, and covers everything from traffic enforcement, narcotics and criminal law to defensive tactics and investigations. Classes are held Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. and include two Saturday sessions. Students also get the chance to visit the 911 dispatch center, the Kitsap County Coroner’s Office and the Kitsap County Jail.

Applications are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and class size is limited to 20 students.
