After testosterone-laden productions of “12 Angry Men” and “The Outsiders,” Bainbridge Performing Arts turns the spotlight on the ladies in February.
“The Women” has the run of the place from Feb. 10-26
Clare Booth Luce’s comedy, “The Women,” follows the conundrum of Mary Haines, played by Lisa Mandlekorn, after she discovers her husband is having an affair with the seductive Crystal, played by Daniela Fagét.
“This play is one of my all time favorites; it’s the Sex and the City of the 1930s!” said Steven Fogell who directs the 17-scene play.
Costumer Barbara Klingberg relished the challenge of portraying the high society styles that populate the play. Authentic vintage clothing of that era is either “tired” or out of the budget, she said. Almost every piece for the 20-person ensemble cast, several with multiple parts, was custom made.
“I have a wonderful crew,” she said of the “other women” who worked tirelessly on the 10 sewing machines in her shop, some madly finishing hats up to dress rehearsal.
And, for the first time Klingberg steps from behind the scenes for her first BPA performance, contributing a couple of supporting roles. So why “The Women”?
“Well, I’m not really ‘Chicago’ material,” she said.
