PSE town hall on utility choice wasn’t objective | LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:

I attended the presentation by PSE at the museum on Monday night as I wanted to hear what they had to say about their service on the Island, and to ask them about why they were resistant to even a study of municipal vs. PSE power on the Island.

I did not last until the Q&A session. I found Mr. Wappler’s presentation so condescending, manipulative and sneering about the concept of a city owned utility and Island Power that I left.

He did not address the question of how PSE will pay for the significant problems at their Montana coal power plant, nor increase green power supply to replace it, but focused instead on the work that PSE has done on the Island. He made it sound as if it were a gift to us instead of something that we pay for in addition to profits to PSE shareholders, and I’m sure generous salaries (at least six figures) to employees like Mr. Wappler.

I do hope that the council will proceed with the study — which is a minor percentage of the amount of money we Island customers pay to PSE every year in fees — so we can objectively understand what the advantages and disadvantages are of public vs. PSE power.

This presentation underscored why I would like the city to look closely at this question, and that PSE is not in a position to offer an objective and unassailably factual perspective on this issue.
