Values, rules addressed in program’s revision | Letters | March 11

The following is in response to Andy Rovelstad’s letter (“City’s Code of Ethics isn’t all that ethical,” March 4):

Mr. Rovelstad is correct in noting that the current City of Bainbridge Island Ethics Program is narrow and rules-based.

Over the past 18 months, the Ethics Board has drafted a comprehensive revision of the program, which is currently under consideration by the City Council.

The proposed changes emphasize ethical values in addition to rules, and would allow broader consideration of ethical questions in city affairs, such as the issues raised by Mr. Rovelstad.

We hope that citizens will read the draft (see City Council’s March 9 agenda) and provide input.
