Hazel M. Norton, age 80
Bainbridge native Hazel M. Norton, age 80, died April 29 in Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen.
She was born Oct. 23, 1921 on Bainbridge to Lee C. and Verdie Beck.
She was raised on the island, where she enjoyed sewing and fishing. She attended Pleasant Beach Elementary School and graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1940.
Following her formal education, she worked at the naval shipyard in Bremerton.
In the early 1940s she married Dan McLaughlin; the couple later divorced.
She lived for some time in Seattle, where she worked at the Swedish Hospital and at the O.A. Nelson Group until retirement.
She married R. Norton; the couple later divorced.
She lived in Alaska for several years, and was a resident of the Karr House in Hoquiam before her death.
She was a member of the Emmanuel Bible Church in Seattle and the Seattle Chapter of Tough Love. She enjoyed travelling to Alaska, Reno, Las Vegas and Hawaii, and could often be found camping in various parts of Washington and in Yellowstone National Park. She enjoyed reading, watching the Seattle Mariners, working in her garden, cooking and attending Seattle-area plays, symphonies and musicals.
She was preceded in death by a son, Patrick McLaughlin of Seattle, in 1999.
She is survived by her caregiver and granddaughter Jen-Nei Pellegrini of Hoquiam; grandson Beck Pellegrini of Portland, Ore.; step-daughter Sally Holmes of Lynnwood; former daughter-in-law Lorna Pellegrini of Hoquiam; and three great grandchildren.
Services were held May 4 at Karr House in Hoquiam.
A second memorial service will be held 1 p.m. May 20 in the Emmanuel Bible Church, 503 North 50th Street in Seattle.
Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Port Blakely Cemetery on Bainbridge.
Arrangements are under the direction of Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.
