Former Bainbridge Island resident William Chauncey Smith, age 75, died of cancer Feb. 21 at his Poulsbo residence.
He was born April 28, 1928, to Chauncey Henry and Therzy Kim Smith in Seattle.
He graduated from Magnolia Grade School and Queen Anne High School in Seattle and later attended the University of Washington. He served in the United State Marine Corps from 1946 to 1948, where he attained the rank of corporal.
He was retail salesman and sales manager for several Seattle new and used car dealerships. He was owner/operator of Holiday Motors, Cadillac Lane, Chauncey’s Cars and the Car Circus in Seattle, as well as Bill Smith Oldsmobile-Cadillac-Toyota-Volvo, which he ran from 1966 until retiring in 1988. He was one of the original developers of the Bremerton Auto Center in West Bremerton.
He designed and built several luxury homes and commercial projects for fun and profit.
He was a lifelong yachtsman. He loved to cruise the San Juan Islands, Canadian Gulf Islands and Desolation Sound with family and friends, most recently is his 45-foot Motorsailer, the “King of Hearts.”
He traveled the Caribbean and sailed the British Virgin Islands extensively, and enjoyed years of traveling and camping around the United States in various motor coaches.
He enjoyed golf, tennis, swimming, cycling, hiking, walking and a regular exercise routine. He played all manner of card games and board games, including bridge, backgammon, chess, gin rummy, cribbage and small-stakes poker.
Among his memberships and professional associations were Chi Psi Fraternity, Washington Athletic Club, Bremerton Rotary, Poulsbo Yacht Club, Kitsap Golf and Country Club, Washington State and National New Car Dealers and Import Car Dealers Associations, and the Bremerton Chamber of Commerce (past board member).
He his survived by Peggy, his wife of 53 years; daughter Carol Smith and Jim Spore of Port Orchard; son Bill Smith Jr. and Patty of Bellevue; daughter Kim Dearth and Jack of Port Orchard; grandchildren Larry and Jack Dearth, Alex Spore and Angelina Smith; and brother Terence Smith of Arlington.
