George Donald Strobeck

George David Strobeck Sr., age 85, of Bainbridge Island, died April 16 at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle.

He was born Oct. 4, 1918, in Edgewater, Colo. to George and Louise Strobeck.

On Aug. 11, 1940, he married Anne Ruth Payne in Edgewater.

He graduated from Wheat Ridge High School in Wheat Ridge, Colo., and attended the University of Colorado, Denver, and the University of Washington.

He came to Bainbridge Island in 1941 to work at the Winslow Marine Railway and Shipyard Co.

He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1947, stationed in Pennsylvania. He was then employed as an engineer by Nickum and Spaulding Naval Architects. He worked for L.G. Massart Plumbing and Heating as a field engineer at Kwajalein Atoll. He retired from the firm of Bouillon, Christofferson and Schairer Consulting Engineers as a Professional Engineer in 1981.

He was a watercolorist who also enjoyed trout fishing, walking on the beach and desert, camping, golfing and spending time with his family and friends. He was also a scout leader with Troop 496 of the Boy Scouts of America.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Ruth; son George David Strobeck Jr. and daughter Sharon (Robert) Carter; grandchildren Tamara (D.L.) Bennett, Kristen (Donald) Schwartz, Edward (Tara) Strobeck, Shannon Strobeck, Jennifer Komedal, Robert Strobeck and David Strobeck; great-grandchildren Trevor and Collin Strobeck; and several nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be held 1-3 p.m. May 8 at the Bainbridge Island Commons.
