Bainbridge resident Eleanor R. Kelley died Feb. 29 at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton of heart failure after a series of diabetic illnesses.
She was born Feb. 7, 1917, in Mandan, N.D. to August M. Zueger and his wife, both immigrants from Switzerland. The family later moved to Spokane.
She eventually moved to New York, where she married John J. Fitzpatrick in 1946. They resided on Long Island, New York for some years and later moved back to Spokane, where she worked as the executive secretary to Father Dussalt, vice president of Gonzaga University, for 20 years. Her husband served as assistant insurance commissioner for the State of Washington; he died in 1976.
She was president of Kappa Zeta business girls group and a member of Pi Rho Zeta. She also was president of the Catholic Business and Professional Women’s Association of Spokane.
In 1987, she married attorney Thomas D. Kelley and moved to Bainbridge, where she was active in St. Cecilia Catholic Church. The couple travelled extensively in Europe and Hawaii until she developed diabetes in 1994.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Kelley, of Yeomalt Point; two sons, Scott Fitzpatrick of Seattle and Michael Fitzpatrick of Connecticut; and a sister, Kathleen McFarland of Spokane. She is also survived by four step-children, Bill Kelley of Bainbridge, Thomas D. Kelley Jr. of Whidbey Island, Maureen (Thomas) Jurcak of LaJolla, Calif., and Helena (George) Chechopoulos of Marrowstone Island.
A rosary will be held at 10 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. on March 8 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Interment will be at Holyrood Cemetery in Shoreline.
Remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
