Dorothy Spragg O’Brien

Dorothy Spragg O’Brien, age 89, died July 4 at her Bainbridge Island home.

She was born Feb. 17, 1914 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

She supported her community in many ways. She was involved in Gamma Phi Beta, Broadmoor Golf Club, Sunset Club, Seattle Milk Fund, Cancer Lifeline and Children’s Hospital.

She and her husband Bob established the Nursing Education Endowment Fund whose primary purpose is to provide support for the professional development of Children’s Hospital nurses. In 2002, they received the Pennington award for distinguished and extraordinary commitment, dedication and service to Children’s Hospital.

Besides the financial help she provided to Cancer Lifeline, she was also a three-time cancer survivor who provided encouragement and hope to those facing the cancer challenge.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Robert D. O’Brien, Bainbridge Island; son Robert J. (Jan) O’Brien, Bainbridge Island; daughter Kathleen (Tom) O’Gorman, Poulsbo; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and sister Kathleen Fisher, Mill Creek.

At her request, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cancer Lifeline, 6522 Fremont Ave. N, Seattle, WA 98103 or Children’s Hospital Foundation, MS CL-04, P.O. Box 5371, Seattle, WA 98105-9907.

It was her hope that people would celebrate her life by spreading kindness and finding a way to do good deeds daily.
