Bainbridge native Percy Francis Henderson, age 90, died Aug. 28 at Martha & Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo.
He was born Nov. 20, 1911 at his family’s home on Parfitt Avenue in Winslow to Percy G. and Irma (Wright) Henderson and was a lifelong resident of Bainbridge until moving to Martha & Mary in 1996.
He attended Bainbridge schools, graduating from Bainbridge High School in 1930. He fished in Alaska from the 1930s to the early 1960s, serving as engineer on the fishing boat Cypress. Later he worked as a groundskeeper for the Seattle School District until his retirement in 1977.
In 1952 he married Eleanora Van Pelt. The couple divorced in 1980.
He was a charter member of Bainbridge Aeire No. 3586 Fraternal Order of Eagles. He served as president in the 1980s and volunteered in the organization’s bingo hall for many years.
Interested in Bainbridge Island history, he was a member of the Bainbridge Island Historical Society; his recollections were featured in the book, “Glimpses of Bainbridge,” by Phoebe Smith (1992). He was also an avid reader and tinkerer.
He is survived by children David Henderson and wife Barbara Allen of Tucson, Ariz., Susan Henderson Neese and husband Steve Norberg of Port Angeles, Percy Henderson and wife Marlys of Seattle and Michael Henderson of Suquamish; step-children Victoria Farnsworth and husband Neil of Federal Way, and Warren Van Pelt and Jerry Van Pelt, both of Bremerton; grandchildren Garrett Neese, Walter, Clare, and Eleanor Allen-Henderson, Angela Hamilton, Sheri Ellermeier, Ann Uluilakepa and Wendy, Kristi, and Nick Van Pelt. He is also survived by sister Ariel Stranne of Bainbridge Island and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Jessie Komedal, Virginia Komedal, and Kathleen Kolehmain, and brother Wilson “Bill” Henderson.
A graveside service will be held at 2:15 p.m. Sept. 7 at Seabold Cemetery. A reception will follow at Seabold Church.
