Gertrude Hebert age 79, died on May 1 at the Madison Avenue Retirement Center.

She was born in 1922, daughter of Leon Gerald Stickney.

She graduated from Toppenish High School in 1940. She received a bachelor’s degree in education and a bachelor of science degree in nursing from University of Portland in 1944, later obtaining a master’s degree in nursing at Central Washington University.

She and her husband, Dr. James F. Hebert, moved to Yakima in 1951, where they raised seven children.

She taught nursing at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Nursing and at Yakima Valley College for 15 years.

She served on the boards of Catholic charities, the Comprehensive Mental Health Services Board and on the National League For Nursing Accreditation, where she was responsible for reviewing practical nursing programs throughout the country. She also served a three-year term with the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.

She was an active volunteer for Hospice in Yakima, Wash.

As a resident of Bainbridge, she was an active member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church and was an enthusiastic volunteer with the Blakely school “Study Buddies” program.

She is survived by her children, Susan Hebert, David Hebert and Richard Hebert, all of Seattle, James Hebert of Wenatchee, JoAnne Fiander of Bainbridge Island, Patty Agnew of Bellevue, and Barbara Hebert of Orcas Island, and grandchildren Patrick and Alexa Fiander, Meagan Wynne, Caitlin and Nic Agnew, Scot and Tod Hebert.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. May 4 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of Kitsap County and the Kitsap Humane Society.
