Bainbridge Island officials estimate about 145,000 gallons of raw sewage was spilled into Eagle Harbor last Thursday when a sewer pipe broke.

City crews have since repaired the line, though the total cost of the clean-up is still unclear, said Public Works Director Barry Loveless.

The pipeline broke within 100 yards of the last line failure that occurred in late August, officials said. In the August incident, more than 400,000 gallons of sewage was discharged into Eagle Harbor.

In the most recent event, the city’s public works department received a report of a possible sewage spill from an island resident on Thursday, Jan.23. Officials were able to locate the broken pipeline off of Irene Place and stopped the sewage flow by 9:30 p.m.

A temporary bypass was accordingly set up at the Highway 305 lift station.
