Longtime islander Barbara Ann McLachlan Gow Glass, age 84, died July 11.
She was born Oct. 28, 1917 in Seattle to Alexander Murdoch Gow and Marion Radford Gow. She attended St. Nicholas School and went on to graduate from Smith College.
On Oct. 19, 1940, she married Joseph Christy Glass.
The couple lived in Seattle and summered on Bainbridge Island until the family moved to the island in 1956. The couple relocated to Port Ludlow in 1988, returning to Bainbridge Island in 1999.
She was active in many volunteer organizations and in the Episcopal Church. A talented gardener, she was a longstanding member of the Arboretum Guild units in Seattle and Bainbridge.
She also enjoyed literature, theater and art, and enjoyed Turtle Bluff II music activities on Marrowstone Island.
She also enjoyed sailing with her husband through the Puget Sound and San Juans.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Joseph Glass; daughters Christy Monahan, Laurie Yelle and Joann Gertig; grandchildren David Hoyt, Barbara Stoyko, Sean Monahan and Julie Yelle; and great-grandchildren Ryan and Natalie Stoyko.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Janet Gow Whiting.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. July 20 at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, with a reception to follow in the parish hall.
