Marshall D. Majors, age 92, died May 28, at his Bainbridge Island home, surrounded by his family.

He was born Aug. 9, 1909, in Ripley, Tenn., the oldest of eight children.

He graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville with a business degree. He served in the Navy and was assigned to the hospital ship Mercy.

He met Edna Green and they married in 1946.

They moved to Bainbridge Island in 1947 and resided in their Manzanita home from 1950 until the time of his death.

He worked for the Veteran’s Administration, FHA and retired as the area director of Housing and Urban Development.

He served on the Bainbridge Island school board for 12 years; was past president of Washington State School Board Association; charter member and past president of North Kitsap Rhododendron Society; past president and member of Rhododendron Species Foundation at Weyerhauser in Federal Way; and a member of Hardy Fern Society.

He loved his home and especially enjoyed sharing his garden, which was featured twice on the Bainbridge-in-Bloom Tours.

He is survived by one son, John Majors; two daughters, Anne (Roger) Chick, and Jane (Paul) Sutherland of Bainbridge Island; two sisters, Elizabeth Githens of Waco, Texas and Sarah Morgan of Houston, Texas; one brother, Jim Majors of California; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In celebration of his life, the family will hold open house 5-8 p.m. July 11 at the family home at 13175 Manzanita Drive.
