Henry Bascum Garrigues

Former Bainbridge resident Henry Bascum Garrigues, M.D., died Feb. 10. He was 91.

He was born on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1912, in Detroit, Mich., to Alfred and Anna Garrigues.

He excelled in his studies and was awarded full scholarships to Harvard College and Harvard Medical School.

He led a distinguished career as a general and vascular surgeon.

In 1938, he married Frances Holmes of Boston, Mass.; the couple raised four children and was married 62 years before her death in 2000.

In 1964, he raced his beloved sailboat “Calypso” to win the ‘64 Tri-Island Series. He enjoyed golfing in his later years, and took great pleasure in his residences and gardens on Bainbridge Island and Maui, Hawaii.

He was a member of the Seattle Yacht Club, the Men’s University Club, Meadowmeer Golf and Country Club and the Maui Country Club.

He is survived by son Henry Jacques Garrigues (Ursula) of Bainbridge Island; daughters Renee Garrigues-Goodwin (Bob) of Seattle, Nicole Garrigues Pung of Maui, Hawaii and Michele Garrigues Macbeth (Rick) of Lynnwood; and grandchildren Alysa Holt (Nick), David Garrigues (Catherine), Eric Pung (Kim), Annette Garrigues, Christina Garrigues and Laura “Petunia” Adcock.

Private services will be held at his request. Remembrances may be made to the Virginia Mason Heart Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice.
