Amy J. Johnsen

Longtime Bainbridge Island resident, Amy J. Johnsen, age 75, died May 4 at her home.

She was born March 13, 1929 in Chicago, Ill., to Emil and Lucy (Bispala) Johnson.

She went to school at Haite Grade School with the same school members through Senn High School in the same locality.

Amy started nurse’s training in March 1947 at Northwestern University via Wesley Hospital in Chicago, Ill., and finished three years later in 1950 in time to take “State of Illinois Boards” thus becoming a Registered Nurse in Illinois.

She then was employed at Research and Education Hospital in Chicago.

On the evening of Nov. 22,1950 she was married to J. Robert Johnsen at Lutheran Church on Wilson Ave. in Chicago.

They moved to Champaign, Ill., where J. Robert was in school at University of Illinois. Amy was Head Nurse of Carl Hospital at Champaign until J. Robert graduated in June of 1952.

The day after graduation they loaded all their possessions in the car and went to Denver, Colorado. There she was a Head Nurse on the infant floor of Denver Children’s Hospital until they moved to Bainbridge Island, where they have lived since.

They have been members of Bethany Lutheran Church since 1955 and Amy was a member of P.E.O. since 1963.

Amy loved to do crafts, especially beadwork, travel and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, J. Robert Johnsen, Bainbridge Island; son Brian Johnsen, Renton; daughter Claire Chavanu and grandsons Andrew and Kyle Chavanu, Bainbridge Island; daughter Sandra Johnsen Sahleen and grandson Cole and grand daughter Karsen Sahleen.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. May 20 at Bethany Lutheran Church.
