Bainbridge Island resident Laura Carter, age 81, died Feb. 9 at her home on Baker Hill.
She was born July 6, 1922, in Olema, Wash. to Eddie and Myrta (Warner) Holzhauser.
During World War II, she worked at the shipyard canteen on Bainbridge.
On Dec. 27, 1943, she married Herbert Carter; the couple was married 42 years until his death on April 8, 1985. She raised three children and was foster mother to her husband’s orphaned 11-year-old brother, Mel Carter. She enjoyed music, collecting costume jewelry, and her extended family.
She is survived by a daughter, Victoria White of Poulsbo; two sons, Wasley Carter, who resides in the family home on Bainbridge, and Stanley Carter of Arlington; foster son Mel Carter of San Jose, Calif.; a sister, Zora Montgomery of Keaau, Hawaii; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date. Remembrances may be made to the American Heart Association or the Bainbridge Public Library. Arrangements are by Miller-Woodlawn.
