Alfred Richard “Dick” Crist, 64, of Salem, Ore., died Jan. 5.

He was born Feb. 9, 1937 in Port Angeles, to Alfred and Joanna Belle (Richards) Crist. He grew up in Snohomish County, and graduated from Edmonds High School.

He earned a degree at Seattle Pacific University, and taught school in Clark County before moving to Oregon to attend graduate school.

He earned master’s degrees from Western Evangelical Seminary and the University of Portland, then taught in the Gladstone and Gervais, Ore., school districts. He was also an adjunct instructor in the GED program at Chemeketa Community College in Salem.

Following his retirement from teaching, he worked for the J.M. Smucker Co., and was a tutor for students in Cascade Public Schools.

An active member of First Baptist Church in Salem, he taught adult classes, served as a deacon and did visitations to hospitalized parishioners.

His interests included gardening, reading and American history. He took his family on numerous vacations to the East Coast, the Southwest and California, with travels generally planned around historic sites, museums and railroad fairs.

In the last year of his life, he enjoyed a train trip by steam locomotive through the Columbia Gorge and around Central Washington, and also toured New England and Cape Cod with his wife and their friends.

He also enjoyed classical, choral and organ music, and regularly attended Oregon Symphony and Pops performances in Portland.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Lois Crist of Salem, Ore.; son Douglas Crist of Bainbridge Island; sisters Patricia Osborn of Camano Island and Dorothy Dolan of Marysville; brothers Richard Wyatt of Mount Vernon, Raymond Crist of Lyons, Ore., and Earl Wyatt of Brookings, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 12 at First Baptist Church in Salem, Ore. Memorials can be made to the church’s Family Life Center.
