Ruth Parsons Hofmann

Bainbridge Island resident Ruth Parsons Hofmann, age 83, died Feb. 13 at her home.

She was born Oct. 3, 1920 in Great Neck, Long Island, N.Y., the daughter of Henry and Agnes (Harrison) Parsons.

She attended high school on Long Island and earned her undergraduate and Masters in Business Administration from the University of Michigan.

While in Ann Arbor, Ruth met Harry Hofmann, whom she married in 1941 in Great Neck.

She spent the first few years of her marriage as a homemaker before pursuing her degree in art in Greenwich Village.

During this time she also raised three children and helped her husband run a boatyard business.

She opened her own studios on Staten Island and then on Long Island, N.Y., where she taught pottery and later turned her attention to sculpture.

In 1964, the family moved to Marin County, Calif., and she enrolled at San Francisco State University, where she earned her masters of fine art with an emphasis on printmaking.

She then spent many years teaching at the Dominican Academy, a prep school for Dominican College. Her love for art was a constant throughout her life.

In 1977, she and her husband moved to Bainbridge Island. There she served on the board of directors for Helpline House. An avid gardener, she was a member of the Rhododendron Society, the Hardy Fern Foundation and the Arboretum Foundation.

She also enjoyed reading and the Women’s University Club book discussions.

She is survived by two sons, Peter Hofmann of Bainbridge Island and Thomas Hofmann of Seattle; one sister, Catherine Hourigan of Torrance, Calif.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 28 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church on Bainbridge Island.

Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
