Bainbridge Island resident Gladys May Sarin, age 89, died March 8 at Messenger House Care Center.

She was born May 20, 1912 is Seattle to Rev. Carl and Amy Kallgren, early settlers of the island, and lived on Bainbridge her entire life. In 1930, she graduated from Bainbridge High School, where she played center on the Bainbridge High School girls basketball team.

Her early memories of the island included the introduction of telephone service; taking the Mosquito Fleet ferries to various destinations on the island and adjoining towns; blackberry picking expeditions; and dancing at Fosters Pavilion at Fletcher Bay.

She married Wallace Sarin in 1931. Together, in the height of the Great Depression, the couple built their own house in Eagledale, where they raised their family.

Her interests included gardening, raising orchids, photography, painting, sports, fishing and traveling. She loved the island and was an enthusiastic Bainbridge sports fan, attending all youth sports activities from Little League to high school.

She was a member of the Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church, The Amelia Hungerford Guild of Children’s Hospital, The Bainbridge Island Senior Center and the Evergreen Singers.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982 and by brothers Cyril, Kenneth, Earl and Ralph Kallgren.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy Wright of Las Vegas; a son Jack and his wife Vicki of Bainbridge Island; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. March 15 at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church.

Remembrances may be made to the Bainbridge Island Senior Center or to Children’s Hospital.
