Winton Pern Tripp
January 7, 1923- February 19, 2016
Winton Pern Tripp, 93, of Sun City, Arizona, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2016. He was born January 7, 1923, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Tracy Alfred and Ruby Georgia (Ashelford) Tripp. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Florida. During a tour of duty in the Army during WWII, he met and married Shirley Ann Langlois in 1944, in Broward County, Florida. They were the parents of Gary W. Tripp and Tracy A. Tripp.
Winton grew up on the beach in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His years growing up on the beach inspired him to move to Yeomalt Point on Bainbridge Island, where he and Shirley raised their two sons.
Winton was an honest and honorable man. He turned his honesty and business skills into a thriving car and truck leasing business. That business helped launch Airborne Airfreight as a leading national player. As a result of the leasing business, Winton and Shirley were able to retire at age 55 and spent the next 35 years traveling and enjoying life and their family. Winton was fond of saying, “If you don’t do it now, it will never get done.” He and Shirley lived that way whether it was spending winters in Arizona or Hawaii, or summers on Bainbridge Island. Their travels from coast to coast in “Big Silver,” their Airstream trailer, their trips to Europe, and the ocean cruises, contributed to their great and fun life.
Their two sons adored their father for the great role model he was. He thought Bainbridge Island was the perfect place to raise their sons and it was. The time spent growing up on the Island was the single greatest thing to shape their sons lives, and for that Gary and Tracy are eternally thankful.
Winton and Shirley had a great life and were loved more than words can express.
He is survived by his sons Gary (Sylvia) Tripp, Tracy (Tamara) Tripp, and granddaughter, Lindsay Morton-Tripp, and many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, and brothers Tracy Alfred Tripp Jr., John Benjamin Tripp, and Eugene Alfred Tripp.
Winton was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and friend to all. His ashes will be spread off Yeomalt on Bainbridge Island, to join those of Shirley’s, placed there following her death in 2008.
