“The Spartan soccer team took a page from Shakespeare in their 3-2 win at Port Townsend on Thursday – taking Macbeth’s So fair and foul a day I have not seen literally.Fair was Bobby Lee deliberately missing a penalty kick because he felt that the linesman’s call awarding him the wide-open opportunity was in error.Foul came with 20 minutes left in the game, when a Spartan mistook a baseball foul line for the soccer out-of-bounds line, stopped in his tracks to turn the ball over to the Redskins, and loudly uttered a well-known expletive that resulted in a red card and his immediate ejection. And the Spartans averted a possibly tragic ending when Brian Oldenkamp drilled a 25-yard bullet with the clock reading 00:00 to give his team a win that nearly slipped away.We were a little overconfident, coach Alex von Reis Crooks said.Especially so when they took a 2-0 halftime lead on an Alex Ruder goal in the 12th minute and another by Mitka von Reis Crooks in the 33rd minute.But Port Townsend scored twice at 50 and 53 minutes, and only a great save by keeper Ollie Ludlow on a penalty kick kept the Spartans from losing the lead and set the stage for Oldenkamp’s last-second shot. Overconfidence seems to have been pervasive as rain during the week as Olympic’s coach told von Reis Crooks that his team might have taken the Spartans too lightly before Tuesday’s game.But playing in sloppy conditions, the Spartans knocked off the Trojans 4-2 despite playing much of the second half a man short because of a red card. Von Reis Crooks disagreed with the call, terming it a misinterpretation of the rules.But he had no disagreement with Ludlow’s play, terming it the best thing about the game.He praised Ludlow for a series at the beginning of the second half. Though his team was up 3-0, von Reis Crooks was wary of Olympic’s forwards and ability to score quickly.When they threatened a minute into the second half, Ludlow made three straight punch-out saves before finally gaining control of the ball. He finished with 11 saves.That had to be fantastic for his confidence, said von Reis Crooks.It also had to be fantastic for the confidence of his team that they were again at full strength and broke a two-game scoring drought in the 25th minute when Ruder slammed home a cross from Matt Dick.Four minutes later, Mitka von Reis Crooks fired a shot that apparently caromed off a defender into the goal, though it was credited to Lawrence Ream, who was terrifying the defender at that point, said von Reis Crooks.And at the 37th minute, Mitka von Reis Crooks scored a solo insurance goal.Olympic finally got on the board at 51 minutes, but Mitka von Reis Crooks answered unassisted goal 10 minutes later. Though the Spartans played shorthanded from then on because of the red card, they really stepped it up after that, von Reis Crooks said. Olympic scored in the 78th minute on a penalty kick to close out the scoring.The team, now 4-2, hosts Bremerton on April 10. “
