Jake Santelli led his backstroke heat Friday at King County Aquatic Center with a 53.65, only a tenth of a second off his state seed time. In Saturday’s 3A State championships, Santelli knocked his time down to 53.45, good for fifth place overall.
In the 200 individual medley, Santelli qualified for Saturday in third place, but was not in the top eight of the state finals.
Jake Christensen pumped his fist after advancing to the 100 freestyle finals with a solid second-place 48.35, and the senior’s 22.10 in the 50 free earned him third place and a spot in the final round of swimming.
Christensen ended his Spartan swim career at sixth in the state in the 100 free with a time of 48.19, and a seventh-place finish in the 50 free at 21.96.
The Spartan 200 and 400 free relay teams each took third place in opening heats, but did not qualify for the finals.
Freshman diver Olaf Olson marked his first state appearance with a sixth-place finish in 1-meter diving. Olson scored 323.25 points overall.
State wrestling
Zach Smith dropped Squalicum’s Jace Cutrer in his opening round at the 3A state Mat Classic in Tacoma, but the quarterfinals were a bit tougher for the junior — Branden Shetlin of North Thurston defeated Smith 6-1, with Smith falling into the consolation bracket.
His 9-3 loss to Jacob Tarvin of River Ridge ended the Spartan’s state run a bit sooner than he would have liked.
Billy Thomas lost to Washougals’s Jamie Watts in the 171-pound opening rounds, but came back with a narrow 5-4 win over Gabe Rader of Squalicumfi.
Thomas then bowed out of the tournament with a 9-5 loss to Kyle Morris of Columbia River.
