Golfers take home trophy
The Bainbridge boys golf team started the second season off the right way: with a win at the Higgins Memorial Thursday.
The foursome of Austin Hurt, Paul DeBarros, Jamie Neill and Rick Ulloa posted a 305, three strokes better than second place finisher Port Townsend.
Hurt was the medalist for the event, shooting a 68, or three under par.
The senior scored six birdies and just three bogeys over the 18-hole course.
DeBarros was second with a 73, while Neill had a 81 and Ulloa carded an 83 to round out the scoring.
According to head coach Bob Dwyer, it’s the first time that Bainbridge has won the title since 1981. The team also won the tournament numerous times in the 70s.
12 different Peninsula teams participated in the 40-year-old tournament.
Hurt and Neill, who will represent the Spartans at the state tournament, head to the Skagit Country Club in Burlington next Friday to defend their title in the Bill Egbers Memorial.
Kickers can’t get a break
The Bainbridge soccer team can’t buy a win right now – and it may cost them a chance to make the playoffs.
They’ve scored just two goals in their last five losses, four of which have been league losses.
They had plenty of opportunities against Bishop Blanchet Tuesday, but lost when Alex Busilacci put one in past a diving Alex Bolt at the 24th minute for the only score.
They also lost to Eastside Catholic 2-0 on Thursday.
They play Seattle Prep at the Starfire Complex next Tuesday.
/‘Fins win at the ‘Boat’
The Bainbridge Bluefins swim club dominated at the Ferryboat Races last Saturday at the BIAC.
‘Fins swimmers placed first in 32 of the 36 events, which were no longer than 50 yards.
C.J. Waite, Spencer Alpaugh and Kristine Valdez finished first in four different events.
Tess Harper finished first in the 50 meter freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and set a personal best of 31.12 in her signature event, the 50 meter butterfly.
