The fun is over. Now the games begin.

A quirk of scheduling presented the girls basketball team with a succession of teams whose combined season record is 1-14 as the Spartans jumped out to a quick 4-0 start.

Their most recent routs came against visiting Chief Sealth, 69-20, on Friday, followed by a 68-38 win at Ingraham on Saturday – the Spartan’s closest game of the season.

But tonight the Spartans face an opponent fully capable of biting back as they travel to Rainier Beach to face the similarly unbeaten Vikings (5-0).

“Now we actually play somebody,” said coach Penny Gienger of the team that the Spartans defeated 50-52 in the opening round of last year’s state tournament. “They’re really quick and aggressive. They’ll be tough.”

“I hope we’re quick enough to play with them, though we’re quicker than we were last year. Our defense is better than last year, but we’re not as experienced inside.

“We haven’t had to really run our offense this year,” she added, as the team has enjoyed a feast of fast breaks in overwhelming their opposition by an average of more than 42 points a game. “We’ll have to see how we do.”

After a lackluster opening against visiting Chief Sealth on Friday – it took nearly two minutes for the Spartans to get their first field goal – Bainbridge raced to a 13-0 lead by forcing 10 turnovers in the first five minutes.

But the Seahawks mounted a minor comeback as they turned over the ball just once in the next three minutes and beat the Spartan press a couple of times to close the first quarter margin to 15-6.

Lee Maloney opened the second quarter with two free throws, Fab Rezayat hit a trey and then fed Christine Schwager for a fast-break layin to increase the Spartan lead to 22-6 in just over a minute and a half.

After a Seahawk field goal, the Spartans went on a 14-0 tear in four minutes and went into the locker room ahead 36-10.

They extended the margin to 54-15 after three quarters, including a highlight-film fast break. Alice Russell pulled down a rebound, flicked a quick pass to Rezayat, who just as quickly fired a lead pass toward Morgan Zajonc. A Seahawk deflected it, but Zajonc grabbed the carom without breaking stride for an easy layin.

The fourth quarter was highlighted by Natalie Berry, who scored all six of her points in a two and a half minute span.

Zajonc led the team with 17 points, while Russell added 11. Christine Schwager and Lee Maloney both had ten, Rezayat nine, and Tiana Gallagher, Courtney Kimball and Haley Wiggins all had two.

On Saturday, the Spartans jumped out to a 39-17 halftime lead and coasted home. Zajonc and Rezayat led Bainbridge scoring with 12 points each, while Russell had 11. Maloney scored eight, Gallagher seven, Kimball and Berry both had five, and Schwager and Wiggins added four. Rezayat had a season-high seven assists.

Bainbridge JVs 47, Ingraham JVs 17 – The Spartans had little trouble against the Rams on Saturday, extending a 23-4 halftime lead as everybody on the team scored.

Malerie Romero and Emily White both had 10, while Angela Keller and Jaxsen Solseng each tallied six.

“This next week will be a good test to see if we can rise to the competition,” said coach Wendy Clark.

Bainbridge JVs 51, Chief Sealth JVs 18 – “Everybody scored, which was the best stat,” Clark said of Friday’s game. “We’re getting better every game.”

Ahead 21-8 at the half, the Spartans shut out the Seahawks 16-0 in the final quarter.

Joceyln Moody led the team with nine points. White had eight, while Michelle Baggett and Solseng both had six.

Port Angeles “C” 42, Bainbridge “C” 21 – Sarah Scott scored eight points to lead the Spartans, and Amanda Szarzynski added seven as the team even its season record at 1-1.

At the helm was Gienger, who took over due to the illness of coach Kelly Beemer.

Following last night’s game against North Mason, the Spartans host Holy Names tonight at 5:00 at the Commodore gym and Blanchet on Saturday.
