Up and down the Eastlake High School court the Spartans went, hitting baskets at an astonishing rate – and taking their first round game in the Cascade Classic into overtime.

In the end, however, British Columbia’s Chilliwack Tillicums pulled out a 73-71 win to send the BHS girls hoops to the consolation round in the three-day tourney.

“We didn’t know what they were going to do,” said Bainbridge coach Penny Gienger, “but we didn’t execute on defense. We got it under control after the first quarter.”

Two Chilliwack players, Jane Meadwell and Laura Hallinan, did most of the damage: Meadwell sank six three-pointers en route to 30 points, with Hallinan at 25 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out.

Bainbridge fought back from a 61-50 deficit to take a 64-63 lead with 1:18 to go. But the Tillicums tied at 64-64 on a free throw at the 1:02 mark. The game went to overtime when a short shot by Alice Russell, who hit a game-winning three-pointer against Lakeside last Friday, rolled off the rim.

In the extra period, Bainbridge went up 69-66 after Russell nailed a three and Morgan Zajonc hit two free throws. But Chilliwack took the lead for good on two field goals, the later a three-ball for a 72-69 lead.

Freshman guard Allie Picha nailed a jumper with 49 seconds left, but that was as close as the Spartans got, as a Russell trey missed at the buzzer.

Picha and Zajonc had 17 points, Lee Maloney and Tiana Gallagher each had 12, and Russell finished with 11 points.

“Sometimes a game like this makes you better,” said Zajonc. “Chilliwack played aggressively. We had a lot of missed shots that should’ve gone in. If we played them again, we’d beat them.”

The Spartans played Eagle Point, Ore., yesterday at Skyline High School.
