“The Bainbridge Spartan boys’ and girls’ cross country teams ran away with victories on the North Kitsap home course Thursday afternoon.In the boys’ race, seniors Evan Galloway and Andy Reese led the Spartan charge with a one-two finish, as Bainbridge chalked up just 21 points (low score wins), followed by North Kitsap at 44 and Sequim 53. Galloway ran the three-mile course in 16:20, with teammate Reese in hot pursuit at 16:22. The closest opponent was Jim Robson of North Kitsap, finishing third at 16:33.Also finishing in scoring positions for the Spartans were Colin Kuester in fourth, Steve Gardiner in sixth and Max Gordon in eighth. Taking 13th and 14th in the 21-runner field for Bainbridge were Tim Freeman and Chad Weldy.The score was not so decisive in the girls’ race for the Spartans. Sequim leader Kierstein Bailey won the race in a sizzling 19:20, outpacing the field by over a minute. However, the Bainbridge runners packed in all five scoring runners in the top 11 to take the team title.Bainbridge scored 29 points, followed by North Kitsap 36 and Sequim 97. Leading the way for the Spartans were junior Sarah Grue, in second place at 20:26, and junior Audrey Bennett, in third place at 21:08. Also scoring for Bainbridge were Sara Dean in sixth place, Colleen Burke in seventh and Lia Layton in 11th.Rounding out the Spartan girls’ contingent were Chrisy Lubovich in 12th, Carla Inch 15th, Anna Greist 16th, Mackenzie Adams 17th, Kathryn Bergh 19th, Mikal Hemingway 20th and Jamie Fleischfresser 22nd.Bainbridge’s Paul Lang won the boys’ junior varsity race in 17:21.The Spartan runners will be at Bremerton next Thursday for another three-way meet with Bremerton and Klahowya.Girls swim to win in Wolves’ watersThe lanes belonged to Bainbridge in Sequim Tuesday afternoon as the Spartan girls’ swim team rode a wave of first-place finishes to victory, 134-55.The host Wolves could manage only one first-place swim for the day, with Bainbridge touching first in the other 10 swimming events, and scoring a victory in the diving competition.The wins were spread across the team for Bainbridge. Sarah Weigle won the 200 IM; Megan Lockwood was victorious in the 50 free; Erin Russell won the 100 fly; Julie Sullivan touched first in the 100 free; Lisa Weigle took first in the 500 free; Leslie Wukstich won the 100 back; and Emily Silver took home the 100 breast victory. Spartan Tessa Mabry was the diving champ for the day, and all three relay races belonged to the swimmers in blue and gold.Bainbridge is swimming at the King County Aquatic Center today against perennial state powers Mercer Island and Wilson. The team will be on the road again next Tuesday afternoon against Olympic and Klahowya. Water polo boys fall to BellevueIn the pool, no matter the sport, fast swimmers make a difference.The Bellevue boys’ water polo team used a fast start and the smaller Bainbridge pool to its advantage to romp to a 15-11 victory over Bainbridge Tuesday evening.Two weeks before, Bainbridge battled tough with Bellevue at the King County Aquatic Center – a larger pool with no shallow end – before losing 9-8.They’re a better team in a small pool, Bainbridge coach Jeff Clark said. They came out and jumped on us early.The Bellevue side features, among other talented swimmers, the reigning state 50-yard freestyle champion.Like all of the other Eastside schools, they have lots of good swimmers, Clark said.While Bellevue controlled the waters at Ray’s place for the first three quarters, moving out to a 14-5 lead, the Spartans came back strong in the final period.Nate Rooks led the Spartan charge with six goals. Erik Steinecker added two goals and two assists, and picked up two steals. Also for Bainbridge, Dylan Cool had four steals, Jeff Christensen picked off three and Adam Gunn made nine saves in goal.Bainbridge will be at Peninsula next Tuesday and Curtis on Thursday. The Sparts return home Friday for a homecoming match against Lakes, 6 p.m. start.Frosh gridders pound preppiesThe Spartan football program took a look into the crystal ball of the future this week – and it was good.The Bainbridge freshmen team took to Soundview Field in Seattle Thursday and blasted Seattle Prep 30-7 in the regular season opener. Bainbridge started slow, and held a slim 6-0 lead at the halftime break on a touchdown run by Nick Linne. The Spartan machine took control in the third quarter and Bainbridge ended up getting everybody into the game by the time the fourth quarter came along.The Spartan defense literally punched their own meal ticket in the third quarter, as Aaron Olanie and Linne dumped the Prep running back in the endzone for a safety. According to Bainbridge coach Sean Eaton, the coaches promised the team a pizza feed if the defense scores.Linne finished the game with 108 yards rushing and two touchdowns; Dylan Preble led the ground attack with 141 yards and one touchdown, and two receptions for 55 yards.Quarterback Zach Townsend also scored for Bainbridge on a run. He finished with 78 yards on the ground, and hit on 1-for-2 in the passing department for 25 yards. Starting quarterback Joe Picha connected on 3-for-4 for 67 yards. Besides Preble, the other leading receiver was Michael Ersser with two catches for 37 yards. Kicker Eric Smith connected on two extra points to add to the Spartan scoring punch.Defensively, Linne led the way with six tackles and two assists, while Preble had five tackles and three assists.Bainbridge will host Bremerton next Wednesday, 3:30 p.m. kickoff.Spartan spikers maintain intensityOlympic League volleyball teams may be getting the picture that if Bainbridge is coming to town, it may be a long night.While the Spartans are 2-3 on the season, those three losses have come on the road and each match has lasted the full five games. The trend continued this week as the Bainbridge fell to North Kitsap Tuesday on the Viking home court, 14-16, 15-12, 10-15, 15-13, 13-15. In defeat, sophomore Laura Bartunek had a standout match with seven kills and eight blocks. Also, junior Sara Frazee peppered the Viking defense with 16 kills.Thursday night, Bainbridge aced Klahowya 15-3, 16-14, 15-5.
