Trust honors Eisenhauer
John Eisenhauer, CEO of Mercury Online Solutions, has been named the first-ever Educational Leader of the Year by the Bainbridge Public Schools Trust.
“John was one of the first persons to offer his support to our organization,” said Jeff Vincent, trust board president. “His commitment to education and Bainbridge Island public schools has been remarkable. Beyond financial donations, John has given his time, effort and use of his company’s facilities.”

Donations made to the Bainbridge Island Public Schools Trust this year will support science textbooks and materials, reducing class size, and programs to retain the very best teaching staff.
“Successful businesses in a community such as Bainbridge Island have a duty to strengthen the community by giving back,” Eisenhauer said. “I believe strongly in the importance of education, and with my own children in the Bainbridge school system, I’m more than happy to do whatever I can.”
Mercury Online Solutions provides interactive digital signage and kiosk networks for retail, entertainment, education, financial services and other industries. The company is located on Ericksen Avenue.
Founded in 2002, the BPST is a non-profit organization of citizens with enhancing education in the Bainbridge public school system through private, philanthropic support. The Educational Leader of the Year award will be given annually to a community leader who steps forward to support schools.
Local teacher recognized
Bainbridge High School teacher Ann Munro is the first National Board Certified teacher in the Bainbridge Island School District.
Munro is one of 130 teachers in Washington, and 8,199 educators nationwide, to earn the distinction in 2003.
The certification recognizes Munro’s expertise in the fields of English and social studies, and her outstanding pedagogy.
The accomplishment represents a significant investment of time and resources for teachers; the certification process measures a teacher’s practice against high and rigorous standards, evaluating videotapes of candidates’ teaching as well as examining a cross-section of student work. Candidates also take a battery of written exams assessing both teachers’ knowledge, and their understanding of teaching methodology.
Middle school, top award
Woodward Middle School has been nominated, along with six other K-12 schools in Washington state, by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for National Blue Ribbon recognition.
The program honors public and private K-12 schools considered academically superior or that have demonstrated dramatic gains in student achievement.
The U.S. Department of Education calls Blue Ribbon recipients “national models of excellence that others can learn from.”
D.C. insider for a week
Bainbridge High School junior Adrian Hodos will represent the school in Washington, D.C., later this month for the Presidential Classroom Scholars Program.
The nonprofit, nonpartisan civic education organization gives high school juniors and seniors a first-hand look at all areas of the federal government.
During the weeklong program, Hodos will meet members of Congress, presidential appointees, senior military officials, top business leaders and journalists, and debate current issues with peers from the United States and abroad.
Other highlights include a Central Intelligence Agency briefing, a mock presidential election and foreign embassy visits.
Watershed help needed
The Bainbridge Island Watershed Education Program will be training volunteers to help seventh graders do water-quality monitoring of the stream behind Woodward Middle School, 3-4:30 p.m. Feb. 11.

Raising hoops a slam dunk
New basketball backboards were unveiled at Blakely Elementary School on Jan. 23, with a visit by Seattle SuperSonic legend Slick Watts.
The new equipment, and a similar project at Wilkes, were funded through the Sonics and Storm TEAM Foundation and Bainbridge Education Support Team. The Sonics foundation donated $10,000, and participated in the 2003 Hoopfest for BEST..
