Girl hoopsters make districts

The Bainbridge girls basketball team took it to another Metro League team as they defeated the Nathan Hale Raiders 62-36 Wednesday night at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle.

Emily Farrar led all scorers with 19 points.

Anna Wood had 11 points off the bench.

Lindsay Bratonia had eight points, while Brittany Gray, Kirsten Michael and Caitlyn Salo had six points each.

The Spartans held the Raiders to just six points in the first half and single digits through the first three quarters.

The Spartans travel to Seattle Pacific University today to play Holy Names at 9:30 a.m. for the fifth and sixth spots to districts.

If they win, they play the fourth seed from the KingCo League at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mercer Island High School.

Select soccer makes finals

The Bainbridge FC ’92 “Magic” has advanced to the finals of the Washington State Challenge Cup Soccer tournament after defeating FC Mukilteo 3-1 last Saturday at Lake Washington High School in their semifinal match.

Falling behind early in the game, the Magic rallied when midfielder Elya Le worked her way into the 18 yard box and put a beautiful shot between the keeper and the far post to tie the match 1-1 just before half time.

Coming out in the second half, Bainbridge FC looked far more confident and began to take control of the game. Maddy Midas scored the go-ahead goal midway thru the half.

With the Bainbridge defense successfully shutting down the relentless Mukilteo teams attacking efforts, Chandler Bowen put Bainbridge ahead for good with her goal late in the second half.

“It’s a great achievement for these girls and for this team to make it through to the finals,” head coach Tom Weed said. “They have worked so hard all year, they are playing good soccer and they are having a lot of fun.

“They are playing like they have something to prove. They never give up.”

Bainbridge FC ’92 “Magic” is the top ranked girls U-14 team in Kitsap County and is made up of girls from Bainbridge Island, Poulsbo, Port Orchard, Bremerton and Silverdale.

The team is coached and trained by Tom Weed and Phil Avison.

Bainbridge FC ’92 “Magic” will be playing against Eastside FC in the finals at Silverdale Stadium on Feb. 24th at 10 a.m.

“We are preparing for a tough match,” Weed said. “Eastside FC is a quality team. They didn’t lose a game through the entire fall season and they haven’t dropped a game through the tournament.

“We played them in the preliminary round and we drew to a 1-1 tie. It should be a good one.”

Swimmer breaks record

Todd McCarthy from the Bainbridge Island Swim Club broke a 26 year old Pacific Northwest Championship swimming record in the boys 10 and under 100 yard backstroke last Saturday.

McCarthy broke the record by swimming the 100 yard backstroke in 1:06.50.

McCarthy will compete at the Age Group Sectional Championships March 24th and 25th along with fellow BISC swimmers Cameo Hlebasko, C.J. Waite, Isabel Ferguson, Isabel Williams, Julie Pendleton, Keziah Beall, India Wade, Kristine Valdez, Colin Chupik, Kay Sterner, Anna Peirano, Marcus Tonsman, Kim Williams, Taylor Hebert, Spencer Alpaugh, and Andrew McCarthy.
