Sports Roundup – Tumblers keep victory in its clutches/BIGC puts up good scores/Sparts win last two contests

Two more wins put Spartans one away from another undefeated year.

Bainbridge head coach Cindy Guy has had a lot to worry about this season, but like H&R Block, she can relax a bit when it comes to competition time – she’s got people.

“It’s that tremendous amount of depth that we have” that allows them to do well, she said.

“People have been sick a lot,” added Annie Zuckerman. “And hurt. But we’ve done OK.”

The Spartans added two more wins to its total with victories over Nathan Hale and Ingraham last Friday by the scores of 154.7-126.85-12, then defeated West Seattle and the Center School 161.85-128.85-17.7 Tuesday.

The two wins put them one away from another undefeated season and put their undefeated dual-meet streak at 96.

With several tumblers out due to injury or illness or studying for finals, Guy has had to change the lineup constantly, but has had some gymnasts contribute.

Zuckerman won the all-around competition with a score of 34.7.

She placed first on the uneven bars with a score of 8.7 and on the balance beam with a score of 8.8.

The junior, who also tumbles for the Bainbridge Island Gymnastics Club, took second on the floor with a score of 9.0.

“It’s been tiring (keeping a balance) between club and high school, but it’s been good,” she said.

Katie Mathews took second in the all-around score with a mark of 32.3.

The sophomore was first on the floor exercise with a score of 9.1.

Anne Schwartz was third in the all-around score with a total of 31.7.

She was first on the vault with a score of 8.7.

Laura Bricklin and Talia Weiss rounded out the top six in the all-around competition by taking fifth and sixth place respectively with scores of 30.85 and 30.

Bricklin’s highest score was on the floor exercise where she scored a 8.7 while Weiss’ was on the vault with an 8.2.

“I’m really happy for Annie,” Guy said. “She had a good meet.

“She’s added a lot into her bar routine, but hasn’t been able to hit it just yet (until now).”

Even with some of her top gymnasts out with an injury or an illness, they still made a contribution when they can to the team score during a meet.

Lauren Fleming, who has worked through a bad knee, put up a mark of 7.2 on the bars while Sophie Wenzlau, who has several nagging injuries, scored an 8.5 on the beam.

Despite the losses, Guy said she’s been pleased with the younger gymnasts who have stepped up and consistently performed, like, Bricklin and freshmen Schwartz and Adrienne Palay.

“They’ve been great,” Guy said. “They’re very good competitors and they totally get the team concept thing that we’re totally into.”

The high scores have also come as Bainbridge has taken part in a lot of meets due to re-scheduling from other schools, therefore not leaving much time to work in the gym.

“To break 161 is pretty nice,” she said. “We’ve got about ten points to make up to catch up with the big guns.

“We’re looking forward to getting in the gym and work on (our skills),” Guy continued. “They’ve been on the beam something like ten minutes the past five days. They should be on at least 20-30 minutes a day.”

With one meet left to go (Bainbridge took on North Kitsap yesterday) the Spartans get ready to host the Metro League championship meet next Thursday

“I think it’s going to go really well,” Guy said. “We’ve put a lot of planning into it so that it runs really efficiently.”

Originally, the meet was to be held at Woodward, but the logistics were too much.

The bars and floor events will take place in the gymnastics room at BHS, while the bars and vault will be moved downstairs to the Commodore Gym.

Against Nathan Hale, Palay won the all-around competition with a score of 31.2.

She was first on the bars, the floor and the vault.

The championship meet starts at 6 p.m.
