“After four years of practice, the Bainbridge High School Jazz Band will get its day in the sun.Disneyland has selected the band to perform on stage during Disney Magic Music Days this spring. The kids and I are are very excited about the Disneyland performance, said Stephanie Lindjord, the band instructor. Only a small handful of high school bands from around the nation are selected to perform in the park.High school bands from all over the nation audition each year in hopes of performing in front of a real audience at Disneyland. Lindjord said that those groups who are selected to play must demonstrate exceptional musical quality and appearance. This is a great honor and accomplishment for these kids, said Jamie Walter, an active jazz band parent who helped raise $97,000 for the BHS marching band’s uniforms last year. This is a deserving group.Lindjord said the bands in California are exceptional, because music education is a priority there. By hearing others, she said, BHS students will be able to learn by comparison. In addition to the exposure BHS will receive, they will also be ‘clinic-ed’ and critiqued by music professionals who will further develop the musicianship of our students, Lindjord said. When Lindjord came to BHS in fall 1997, the ensemble had only 12 members. The first year we were scrounging, she said. We have been slowly building, and now there are 22 jazz band members and they just keep getting better; if the process is good, the product is good. This is the first year the playing ability and professionalism of the students has developed far enough to travel and promote BHS, she said.Very few of these kids will go into music after high school, Lindjord said. Our philosophy is to help them learn life skills through music. Those include discipline, accountability, hard work, leadership, commitment, focus and goal-setting.Each band member must raise $500 themselves in order to go on the California trip. We’re not taking a trip for fun, Lindjord said. It’s to give them a better education. “
