“When organizers say the summer all-comers track meets are open to everyone, they really mean it. Really.Mostly, it’s kids who participate. For some of the younger ones, a 200-meter event isn’t a dash, it’s a hike. For some of the older kids, the meet is serious training.Over the summer, it’s hard to find a time to go all out, said Andy Reese, a senior-to-be at Bainbridge High School. Even running solo like I did tonight still pumps you up.The all-comers meets, sponsored by the park district, are held every Monday from mid-July to the end of August at the BHS track, beginning at 7 p.m. This Monday, an informal count disclosed roughly 100 participants, probably 80 percent of them pre-teens.We’ve had an enormous turnout from day one this year, meet organizer Jim Whiting said. Tonight is the first time we’ve had enough kids to fill all the lanes in the 4×100 relay.Whiting and a volunteer crew run the meet with impressive efficiency. Prior to the short-distance races, the entrants throng behind the starting line. As the heats are called based upon age, the runners move into their lanes and await the starting gun, so there’s no more than a minute between heats. Then somehow, the scorekeepers track down the winners and record their times.Among the youngsters Monday, Collin Lea, Hank Purcell, Hannah Crichton, and Christopher Bell were all triple victors, winning at 50, 100 and 200 meters in their age bracket.Among the high-school age competitors, Reese registered a time of 10:13 in the 3200-meter run, just ten seconds off his best time last spring.I’m happy with that this time of year, he said. I think me and my friend Evan Galloway are ready to lead the cross-country team this year.Galloway turned in a 4:49.18 in the 1600 meters. He agreed with Reese that the meets are good training tools. There is a good community of runners at the meets. It helps me keep my edge in the off season, Galloway said.Josh Freeman, who graduated from BHS this spring, captured both of the open sprints, running the 100 meters in 11.67 and the 200 in 23.53.Whiting, a long-time runner who formerly published a running magazine, said the event fills a vacuum in the summer season. When I was in graduate school in California, there were good all-comers meets in the summer, Whiting said. And locally, there is one in Edmonds. I wanted to make something available locally. So six years ago, when he moved to the island, Whiting got in touch with Jean Welch at the park district, who he knew because she ran advertisements in Whiting’s magazine for the Toe Jam Hill half-marathon.I said I would organize the meets if she could find a track, Whiting said. The park district and the high school cooperated to make the BHS track available.Whiting says the turnout from high school and adult runners is relatively new.Andy and Evan are exerting some leadership, getting the cross country team to come out, he said. But the focus remains on the kids. That’s important to Whiting, who thinks high-school track is becoming a marginalized sport. My long-term objective is to have the sports editor of the Review talking to a kid who’s come back from the state track meet with a medal saying, ‘I got my start at the all-comers meet.’Monday’s results were as follows:50 meters (boys 4-under) – 1, Campbell Queen 11.57, 2, Ben Freedman 11.95, 3, Casey Brink 15.42.50 meters (boys 5) – 1, Zander Silverman 10.50, 2, Justin Totura 10.60, 3, Greg Shea 10.85.50 meters (boys 6) – 1, Christopher Bell 10.00, 2, Matthew Parker 10.23, 3, Joshua Molksness 10.63.50 meters (boys 7) – 1, Collin Lea 9.43, 2, Nick Logsdon 9.92, 3, Will Jameson 9.95.50 meters (boys 8) – Hank Purcell 8.42, 2, Chandler Foster 8.61, 3, Thomas Sellers 9.06.50 meters (boys 9) – 1, Sam Deery-Schmitt 8.72, 2, Brenden Schruhl 9.11, 3, Brendan Gawlowski 9.20.50 meters (boys 10-11) – 1, Leandre Fischer 7.53, 2, Tyler Campbell 7.54, 3, Sam Sellers 8.63.50 meters (boys 13-14) – 1, Andrew Smith 7.18, 2, Derek Schruhl 7.41.50 meters (girls 4-under) – 1, Grace Purdy 21.29, 2, Lindsay Parker 26.14, 3, Hannah Hunt 26.78.50 meters (girls 5-6) – 1, Katherine Gawlowski 10.15, 2, Vanessa Beck 10.56, 3, Katie Jameson 10.66.50 meters (girls 7-8) – 1, Annique Rice 8.84, 2, Ellen Campbell 9.08, 3, Aviva Gaphni 9.53.50 meters (girls 9) – 1, Sarah Shea 8.60, 2, Jessica Molksness 8.83, 3, Shannon Oslick 8.86.50 meters (girls 10-11) – 1, Hannah Crichton 8.00, 2, Lucie Gendreau 100 meters (mixed, 4-under) – 1, Campbell Queen 22.45, 2, Ben Freedman 26.46, 3, Casey Brink 28.50.100 meters (boys 5) – 1, Justin Totura 20.67, 2, Zander Silverman 20.9, 3, Gregory Shea 21.00.100 meters (boys 6) – 1, Christopher Bell 19.10, 2, Matthew Parker 19.62, 3, Max Robinson 20.45.100 meters (boys 7) – 1, Collin Lea 17.00, 2, Will Jameson 19.52, 3, Nick Logsdon 20.12.100 meters (boys 8) – 1, Hank Purcell 17.30, 2, Chandler Foster 17.75, 3, (tie) Jacob Bricklin, Thomas Sellers 18.00.100 meters (boys 9) – 1, Sam Deery-Schmitt 16.50, 2, Brendan Gawlowski 17.70, 3, Kevin McCormick 17.91.100 meters (boys 10-11) – 1, Tyler Campbell 14.91, 2, Sam Sellers 16.41, 3, Sam Freedman 17.19. 100 meters (boys 12-13) – 1, Andrew Smith 13.50, 2, Leandre Fischer 14.94, 3, Zach Smith 14.95.100 meters (men’s open) – 1, Josh Freeman 11.67, 2, Tim Freeman 11.80, 3, Amon Belleson 12.70.100 meters (girls 5-6) – 1, Kate Gawlowski 19.65, 2, Vanessa Beck 20.47, 3, Kate Jameson 21.50.100 meters (girls 7) – 1, Aviva Gaphni 19.68, 2, unknown, 3, Joanna Shea N/T.100 meters (girls 8) – 1, Annique Rice N/T, 2, Ellen Campbell N/T, 3, Cassandra Totura N/T.100 meters (girls 9) – 1, Sarah Shea 16.38, 2, Jessica Molksness, 3, Shannon Oslick 16.87.100 meters (girls 10-11) – 1, Hannah Crichton 15.57, 2, Lucie Gendreau 16.42, 3, (tie) Brianna Bobiak, Claire Luke 16.72.200 meters (boys 5-under) – 1, Zander Silverman 46.22, 2, Gregory Shea 49.18, 3, Tyler Cox 49.47.200 meters (boys 6) – 1, Christopher Bell 41.11, 2, Colin Chupik 42.43, 3, Max Robinson 43.24.200 meters (boys 7) – 1, Collin Lea 39.25, 2, Will Jameson 43.56, 3, Colby Lea 44.95.200 meters (boys 8) – 1, Hank Purcell 36.12, 2, Chandler Foster 37.49, 3, (tie) Jacob Bricklin, Miles Bludorn, Kevin McCormick 38.48. 200 meters (boys 9-10) – 1, Tyler Campbell 30.89, 2, Sam Deery-Schmitt 36.17, 3, Brendan Schruhl 37.03.200 meters (boys 11-13) – 1, Zach Smith 30.00, 2, Leandre Fischer 31.44, 3, Sam Sellers 35.69. 200 meters (open) – 1, Josh Freeman 23.53, 2, Tim Freeman 24.38, 3, Amon Belleson 25.58.200 meters (girls 5-7) – 1, Aviva Gaphni 43.12, 2, Kate Jameson 43.34, 3, Hannah Robinson 43.66.200 meters (girls 8-9) – 1, Sarah Shea 35.97, 2, Jessica Molksness 36.02, 3, Shannon Oslick 39.58.200 meters (girls 10) – 1, Hannah Crichton 33.94, 2, Brianna Bobiak 35.41.1600 meters (men) – 1, Evan Galloway 4:49.18, 2, Daryl Schruhl 5:14.22, 3, Colin Kuester 5:16.63.1600 meters (women) – 1, Erika Biggs 6:19.10, 2, Nancy Silverman 6:42.89, 3, Cindy Beck 6:51.92.3200 meters (open men) – 1, Andy Reese, 10:13, 2, Max Gordon 11:24, 3, Colin Kuester 12:12.4×100 meter relay (first heat) – 1, Chandler Foster, Hank Purcell, Thomas Sellers, Miles Bludorn 1:16.4×100 meter relay (second heat) – 1, Tim Freeman, Amon Belleson, Josh Freeman, Blake Bodner 50.27.Joggers Mile – 1, (tie) Andy Reese, Evan Galloway, Steven Gardiner, Max Gordon 0:00 off predicted time, 2, Miles Bludorn 0:02 off predicted time. “
