Defense holds Chief Sealth to under 50 total offensive yards.
When not much else was working offensively for the Bainbridge football team Friday night, they still had the fail-safe option: Give the ball to Dayton Gilbreath.
The fullback had 17 carries for 198 yards and three touchdowns as the Spartans defeated the Chief Sealth Seahawks 28-7 in a Metro League crossover game in front of a sparse crowd on a cold night.
“We came out excited and just wanted to have some fun,” Gilbreath said. “We’ve beat them before, but we understood that we can’t come out flat because they’ve got some good athletes.”
Gilbreath put Bainbridge on the board first with a 30-yard run in the first quarter, following his convoy of blockers into the end zone.
That was all the scoring for most of the first half.
Colin Feldtman pushed a 30-yard field goal wide right, the first one he’s missed all year.
Steffen Dacquisto couldn’t haul in a pass from Jordan Wagner in the endzone in the second quarter.
Wagner had problems all night with Sealth’s rush, as they notched five sacks for the game.
But even with the missed opportunities and turnovers by Bainbridge (they fumbled the ball away twice), Sealth couldn’t get its offense going either as the Seahawk passing game was out of sync all night.
The Spartan defense also held firm on Sealth’s running game, holding them to just 22 yards all game.
After a Seahawk punt, the Spartans put together a long drive on big runs by Kauika Peleti and got the benefit of two Sealth penalties.
Bainbridge capped off the drive with Gilbreath running it in from one yard out.
In the third quarter, Gilbreath ran six times for 40 yards on the Spartans’ first drive of the second half.
They also benefited from a Seahawk holding penalty.
Gilbreath scored his third touchdown of the night from eight yards out.
After forcing another Sealth punt, Bainbridge once again caught a break with a late hit penalty called on the Seahawks.
Two plays later, Mario McLaughlin scored his first touchdown of the year from 14 yards out.
Anthony Dixon finally put Sealth on the board when he scored from nine yards out late in the second quarter, but that’s all they could get.
“First and foremost we wanted to get the kids a win,” head coach Andy Grimm said. “We talked about trying to win out with these last two games and go 7-3.
“We shot ourselves in the foot offensively a little bit, but other than that the kids did a pretty good job.”
With the win, Bainbridge gets one last game with a Metro/KingCo crossover.
The Interlake Saints will be the Spartans’ opponent.
Originally the game was to be played in Seattle, but the school was able to get the team to come and play on the island.
“We want to end with a win because all the seniors want to go out with a win,” Gilbreath said. “That’s what we all want.”
Game time is at 4 p.m.
