Museum move begins Sunday
If you’re up at daylight this Sunday, you may be able to catch the annex of the Bainbridge Historical Museum moving down High School Road to its new home on Ericksen Avenue.
“We’ve been planning this move for months,” said Jack Swanson, acting director of the historical society. “There have been a lot of delays, so it’s a relief that it’s finally happening. We’re tickled to death.”
Closed since last October in preparation for the move, part of the museum will hit the road this weekend. The annex will be moved Sunday; the museum building itself, a 1908 schoolhouse, will follow on Feb. 11.
Jeff Monroe, owner of Monroe House Moving Inc., and his crew lifted the annex onto rolling dollies Thursday, having first moved the schoolhouse to get at the annex.
Monroe and crew made holes to slide steel beams lengthwise under the annex, jacked up the building onto orange, block-like cribs that supported it along its length, and then pulled it onto dollies along steel girders slicked with soap.
Come Sunday, the crew will perform the same maneuvers in reverse to settle the annex onto its new foundations.
The annex move will be straightforward, Monroe said, as it is just 16 feet high, and is similar to moving a modular house. Of the 24-1/2-foot-tall schoolhouse move, though, “you’ll really want to see that one,” Monroe said.
“It’s going around the roundabout, and we’re going to have to drag it over the pavement at Sands and New Brooklyn Road on steel and soap over soaped plywood – to protect the sidewalk – since the building is way too high to get under the wires. One foot makes all the difference.”
