With two meets in as many weekends, the Bainbridge Island Boy’s Gymnastics Team were literally flipping head over heels.
It was a loaded field that took to the mat on Jan. 27 at the annual boys gymnastics Flip Out Challenge in Lacey. Nine teams from Washington and Oregon tangled on the floor, vault, high bar, parallel bars, pommel horse and rings.
The Bainbridge Island boys team had a good showing. Level 4 gymnast Kiernan Lieberman took fifth on the floor and rocked the high bar for second place, then finished the Challenge with a fifth-place finish overall.
Tommy Goodhue grabbed a ninth place in rings, Leo Uyekawa landed 10th in floor and rings, and Max Bispham scissored his way to a 12th on the pommel horse. Owen Scheer swung into 15th place on high bar, and Josiah McDaniel leapt to 18th on vault.
Level 5 gymnasts also did well. Abe Muldrow snagged a fourth place on pommel and a sixth on rings. Hugh Fordyce earned fourth place on vault and seventh on the pommel horse. Cameron Austin clinched 11th place on rings.
Level 9 gymnast Nathaniel Opalski also had an outstanding meet. He finished fourth in both pommel and vault.
Last week, the Bainbridge Island boys competed in the Charity Choice Invitational in Tacoma.
Level 4 gymnasts brought their A game to the Feb. 8 invite. Leo Uyekawa took first on the floor and seventh on pommel horse, and finished ninth place all around.
Max Bispham shone on the high bar with a third-place win. He also captured fifth on floor and vault, and claimed the sixth-place finish all around.
Newcomer Owen Scheer landed solid sixth-place finishes in pommel horse, rings and high bar and had an all-around seventh-place finish.
Tommy Goodhue gave a solid performance on rings for a 10th-place finish and Josiah McDaniel earned 10th on high bar.
The level 4 gymnasts were inched out of a third place team finish by only 1/10th of a point.
Level 5 gymnasts had a strong meet as well. Abe Muldrow achieved a solid fourth-place finish on rings and fifth on parallel bars. Collin Hansen posted his highest finishes on the parallel bars with a fifth place and an eighth in both pommel horse and rings. Cameron Austin wielded a 13th on rings.
Level 9 gymnast Nathaniel Opalski seized second on pommel horse and rings, with an impressive third in the all-around.
