“Spartan errors on three ground balls that could have ended the sixth inning led to five North Kitsap runs, and a 7-2 loss that ended the BHS baseball team’s seven-game league winning streak Friday. The Spartan nine played Olympic League-leading Vikings even for five innings on the strength of Chris Shaffer’s pitching and Simon Pollack’s clutch two-out, two-strike single in the second inning to drive in two runs. But in the bottom of the sixth, with the score knotted at 2-2, the Vikings opened with two singles, tallying five runs on the string of field miscues. Fairbank leads lacrossersJesse Fairbank’s goal 47 seconds into Friday night’s boys’ lacrosse game against visiting Maple Valley set the tone for what coach Ryan Painter termed redemption for an earlier game that shouldn’t have been close.Bainbridge had to come from behind to defeat Maple Valley by a goal in overtime two weeks earlier in horrific conditions. But the Spartans opened a 7-3 first quarter lead en route to a 17-5 victory. We came out fired-up with a lot of intensity and played our style of ball, Painter said. They were undisciplined, and that hurt them.Fairbank had five goals and one assist, Adam Smith four goals and an assist, and Jacob Hayashi two goals and an assist. Spencer Evans, Jesse Savage, Andy Kelly, John Moore, Erik Steinecker and Samuel Cameron all had solo scores, while Steinecker and Byron Masi each contributed an assist. Our scoring was spread out because we had the chance to play our third and fourth mid lines quite a bit, Painter said.Hilton tosses one-hitterThe Bainbridge fastpitch team rode Brooke Hilton’s one-hit, seven-strikeout pitching and Angie Rapada’s clutch hitting to a 2-1 win against visiting Port Angeles in the opener of a doubleheader on Friday. Two unearned runs proved costly as the Roughriders edged the Spartans 2-1 in the nightcap.Chrissie Haugen and Caiti Kruse singled in the fourth inning of the first game, then scored with two outs as Rapada ripped a double to the fence.Freshman Sara Robinson pitched almost as well as Hilton in the second game, giving up just four hits. But we had too many errors and wasted too many scoring opportunities, said coach Steve Nelson, as the team left nine runners left on base. The lone Spartan tally came when Alexis Hujar reached first on an error, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Amanda Perna’s fielder’s choice.Golfers roll on at Rolling HillsThe boys golf team defeated Olympic on Monday at the par-70 Rolling Hills course in Bremerton, 141 Stableford points to 134. Bainbridge scorers were: Joe Lanza 73 (33 points), James Toepel 75 (31), Kevin Kramer 80 (26), Matt Kuchin 80 (26), Jarret Jorgensen 81 (25), Matt Reynvaan (non-scoring) 86.Kickers take target practiceThe BHS soccer team had an evening of target practice Monday, taking 40 shots against Klahowya. Though three went into the goal for a 3-1 win, coach Alex von Reis Crooks was a study in frustration on the sideline.Come on, Bainbridge, he yelled at one point, you’re making this harder than it should be!With most of the game played in the Klahowya end and his defenders creeping forward, von Reis Crooks was concerned that his team would be vulnerable to long passes. Which happened in the first half, as an Eagle forward beat his defender down the right side and blasted in a 25-yard shot to the upper corner of the net to cut the Spartan lead at that point to 2-1. Mitka von Reis Crooks scored the opening goal at 6:30 on a cross from Jed Ballou, then set up Kai Hauschulz for an easy header five minutes later on a perfectly placed inbounds throw. Klahowya scored its goal less than two minutes after that, but Bobby Lee’s pass set up Steven Suraci for a short tap-in at 35:00 to give the Spartans some breathing room. The second half was scoreless as the Spartans had more near misses than a roomful of Atlanta girls on the eve of their debutante ball.Racqueteers stumble at PAThe tennis team lost its first match Monday as Port Angeles emerged with a 4-3 triumph that coach Mike Anderson felt was somewhat tainted. With boys doubles tied 5-5 in the third set and Bainbridge serving, the Port Angeles coach halted play while she had her team change the game score at the end of the net. As this is normally done only as the players change sides, it was a less acceptable version of the football custom of calling timeout before an opposing kicker attempts a crucial field goal. It was an inappropriate action on her part, Anderson said. She talked to her players through the fence and stopped play. The ploy proved effective as Bainbridge didn’t hold serve and lost the deciding set 5-7.Elliot Beam and Sam Marshall didn’t lose a game in sweeping boys singles, and the girls doubles team of Jessica Antilla/Kristen Carmel won 6-4, 7-5. But Port Angeles won both girls singles matches and mixed doubles in addition to the asterisked ending to boys doubles.Delgado runs Boston ‘ThonChristopher Delgado was the only islander to complete Monday’s Boston Marathon. Delgado clocked 3:24.09 officially to place 3,329th among more than 15,000 entrants. “
