“The boys’ swim team returned to action by defeating both Central Kitsap/ Klahowya and Olympic in a double dual meet Thursday, winning 129-56 against CK and swamping the Trojans 132-26.Most of the events represented 1-2-3 Spartan sweeps, and in numerous cases the visitors entered only one or two swimmers.It was nice to have some of our swimmers back in the water after they were missing due to vacations or illness, coach Lynn Wells said.The one truly competitive event was diving, with Spartans Zander Burmer and Kris Ley competing against two seasoned CK divers. Late in the competition, Burmer was third, but a spectacular failure by CK’s normally reliable Steven Evans – he hit the water spread-eagled on his back, drenching the poolside judges and receiving no points – moved the Bainbridge freshman into second.He came through big-time on his final 2.4-degree of difficulty dive, to score an overall personal best 187.55 and win by five points. Ley finished with 131.70.With no suspense in the team outcome, attention shifted to individual accomplishments. * Jeff Christensen won the 50 free in 23.19 and his specialty, the 100 butterfly, in 57.85.* His brother Jake not only won the 100 backstroke in a personal best 1:04.64, but also swam a fine 54.62 100 free that won against CK and was a close second to an Olympic swimmer.* Jacob Whitmore continued to shave time off his 500 freestyle time, clocking 5:28.95. * Matt Colley, whose older brother Chris was the Spartans’ top 500 swimmer before graduating, tried that event for the first time and clocked 6:13.75.* Andrew Sperling continued to drop his time in the 100 breaststroke as he did 1:13.59 despite not being pressed – I’m bad at racing just the clock, he said.Perhaps the loudest cheers from teammates came for Chris Collier and Alex Morris, both of whom broke the one-minute barrier in the 100 free, as Collier clocked 58.99 and Morris 59.96.What I saw were some guys swimming off times because they weren’t in the water over the break, assistant coach Greg Colby said. Now we need to get back into the groove. But Collier was at every single holiday practice, and what he did today showed what happens when you keep training consistently.Added Wells: Our swim and dive team is big in the heart and soul department.
