Wow! Brenden Gent belts two grand slams in a single inning.
Third baseman Brenden Gent has quietly had a stellar year at the plate for the Bainbridge baseball team this season.
He’s not quiet any longer.
The senior accomplished a rare hitting feat when he hit two grand slam home runs – in one inning – for his only hits Wednesday against the Eastside Catholic Crusaders in a 20-3, five-inning Spartan rout.
“It was kind of an interesting day,†Gent said. “I didn’t start off too hot and then suddenly I just turned on a switch or something. I don’t know what it was. (But the pitches were) like beach balls when I was hitting them.â€
“It’s kind of amazing that (it) happened. Everyone was kinda shocked.â€
His accomplishment is so rare, that while 11 major leaguers have hit two grand slams in one game, only former St. Louis Cardinal Fernando Tatis accomplished the feat of two grand slams and eight runs driven in the same inning back on April 23, 1999, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Head coach Jayson Gore was amazed at the feat as well, but in a way he called it, as he said their time spent at batting practice on Tuesday was the best he’s seen the team hit all year.
“It’s gotta be a state record,†he said of Gent’s accomplishments of two grand slams and eight RBI in an inning. “Never seen nothin’ like it, man.
“And they were gone. (When the) second one (was hit) I said, ‘Tag,’ and the first one (he hit) I said, ‘Touch ’em all.’â€
Overall, 13 runs were scored in the inning, with Gent driving in eight of them.
Second baseman Matt Frazee hit two homers to drive in five runs in the game, while first baseman Robbie Stevenson and C.J. Hall homered as well.
Gary French, who was called up from JV to start the game, went all five innings for his first ever varsity win.
It’s the third win in four games for the Spartans and puts them back in the driver’s seat for the fourth playoff spot, with an outside chance to win the Metro League Mountain Division if things go their way.
Gent believes the blowout win can only help their confidence in the box.
“The bats were coming around,†he said. “Everyone was hitting well.
“Now that we realize that our playoff (chances) are on the line, we need to step up, and after Wednesday’s game, I can’t see why we can’t do what we did last time.â€
Bainbridge played Eastside Catholic yesterday. They play against O’Dea in the final two games of the season – at O’Dea on Tuesday, then hosting O’Dea on Wednesday.
Game time is at 4 p.m.
