Lucia Opalka, 14, served as a page in the Washington State Senate during the week of Feb. 27.

Sen. Christine Rolfes, a 23rd District lawmaker and Bainbridge Island Democrat, sponsored Lucia’s week in the Legislature. It was the eighth week of the 2017 Legislative Session.

“It was a pleasure to host Lucia last week,” Rolfes said. “She was a great page and I know she enjoyed her time in Olympia.”

During their week at the Capitol, pages learn about the legislative process while assisting senators and staff. They hear lectures from guest speakers and attend page school where they create their own bills in a mock committee setting.

Lucia proposed legislation regarding transgender bathroom rights.

“I loved participating in mock committee,” she said. “It felt super official and cool.”

Pages have many responsibilities during the week that take them all around the Capitol campus and give them access to places restricted to the general public.

Lucia encourages her peers to take advantage of this opportunity while they still can and apply early to make sure they can reserve a spot.

“I had so much fun,” she said. “You get to meet a lot of amazing people.”

Opalka is in eighth grade at Woodward Middle School.
