An autopsy is planned Tuesday for the gunman killed by police at the close of Saturday night’s four-hour standoff in Eagle Harbor.

Kitsap County Coroner Greg Sandstrom said an autopsy of the deceased has been scheduled for the morning of July 11.

Police have yet to identify the man, a 34-year-old Seattle resident, who died after reportedly threatening officers with a rifle who approached his 55-foot sailboat in the middle of Eagle Harbor early Sunday morning.

The man, authorities said, began shooting at the shoreline along Eagle Harbor around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

When Bainbridge police arrived on the harbor at downtown Winslow’s southern edge, the gunman then started shooting toward officers on the shoreline.

Multiple police agencies responded to Bainbridge Island to assist, including a full complement of the Kitsap County Regional SWAT Team.

No one was injured in the gunfire coming from the sailboat, and authorities said the shooting was random.

Emergency workers cleared the shoreline area, including Waterfront Park, as the man on the sailboat continued to fire rounds at the shore.

The gunman was shot just after 1 a.m. Sunday when two police boats approached the man’s vessel and he raised a rifle toward officers, according to Bainbridge Police Chief Matthew Hamner.
