Island artists will once more throw open their doors and present their wonderful wares to guests and visitors from near and far alike as part of the 17th annual Summer Studio Tour, returning to Bainbridge Island from Friday, Aug. 11 through Sunday, Aug. 13.
The popular and free, self-guided art show will once more be held in four different island studios, and feature works from more than 40 regional artists in a variety of media, including paint, photography, jewelry, pottery, wearables, glass, fibers, metals, sculpture and wood.
The studio stops making up this year’s tour are: Dancing Spirit Studio (7021 Fletcher Bay Road NE), Sylvia Carlton’s Studio (1245 Grow Ave. NW), Weissman Studio (10149 NE Roberts Road) and Hidden Cove Pottery & Tile (7176 NE Hidden Cove Road).
Forty-three regional artists, chosen through a jury-based selection process, will be displaying their works and discussing technique and process, spread amongst the four studios, all of which are open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
This year’s offerings include many highlights for returning guests and first time visitors, said tour manager and participating artist Dinah Satterwhite, starting right on the cover.
“The popular brochure this year features a dynamic mixed media bicycle painting by Sydni Sterling,” she said. “Almost dripping with wet paint, the vibrant colors and old-fashioned bike style come alive with texture, dimension, and patterns in a realistic way with some abstract touches.”
Newcomer Tiffany Noel Thiele’s “stunning glass pieces” are also a boon to the tour this year, Satterwhite said.
They “incorporate subtle texture into her pieces, along with lovely patterns and colors. Her functional work includes glass votives, lanterns, plates, bowls, and jewelry.”
“Another artist new to the tour is Bill Austin, guitar-maker extraordinaire,” she added. “With a background in carpentry, he now makes guitars and enjoys blending wood and steel, and experimenting with different combinations of size, depth, woods, etc.”
Additional highlights of this year’s tour, Satterwhite said, include Donna Lark-Weiner, who creates gorgeous high-end felted wearables; Dick Strom’s upcycled metal yard art; Sharon von Ibsch’s stunning photorealistic paintings; and newcomer Andrew Bergh, a photographer who recently opened his own gallery.
