BELLEVUE – The Bainbridge High varsity boys basketball team returned home to start the new year having gone 2-1 at the recent Bellevue College Holiday Classic Tournament. The Spartans faced off against Kings, Hazen and Inglemoor.
“We had a great holiday tournament,” BHS Head Coach Steve Haizlip said.
Things, right off, began well for the island squad, as first, on Dec. 28, the Bainbridge boys took on Kings.
“We beat them 58-44,” Haizlip said. “Overall, just a great performance by the team.
“In this game, Charlie Hoberg hit six three-point shots and Jack Barnes hit four three-point shots.”
Against Hazen, on Dec. 29, things did not go quite as well, however.
“Against Hazen, we led the entire game until they hit a bank three point-shot with 3 seconds left,” the coach said. “We drew up a play that came up just short. Charlie’s [three-pointer] went in and out at the buzzer. [We] lost 57-56.”
Things turned around in the final game of the series, though, on Dec. 30 against Inglemoor.
“We started slow, but rallied to win 56-47,” Haizlip said.
The Spartans returned to their home court to host Seattle Prep on Jan. 2 with an overall season record of 4-6, though they remained 0-6 in league play.
