SATURDAY, MARCH 17
1:43 a.m. A 48-year-old Bainbridge Island woman was arrested for driving while intoxicated in the parking lot behind a downtown Winslow bar/restaurant.
The woman, who was driving a 2017 Fiat 500X, had been drinking in the bar with friends, left and got into her car, despite having agreed to “walk home” with her companions. Her friends say they told her not to drive, but she insisted.
They watched the woman start the car and drive directly into a nearby retaining wall.
The bartender then reportedly came outside and ran to the car, reached through the open window to unlock the door so as to get into the car’s passenger seat and prevent the drunken woman from driving farther. The woman, though, instead quickly drove in reverse and then forward again, crashing into the same wall.
The bartender had not had time to put on her seat belt, and complained of a sore neck and back.
The driver had consumed just two margaritas in the bar, the bartender said, though she was already visibly intoxicated when she initially arrived.
The driver refused to perform a field sobriety test and had urinated in her pants during at least one of the crashes. Her speech was slurred, her eyes were bloodshot and she was arrested.
Ultimately, she refused to perform a breathalyzer at the police station as well.
