To the editor:

I like Blair Bess’ ideas on activism, but would go further. (“Activism in the Age of Trump” by Blair Bess, bainbridgereview.com, March 26, 2018).

It is creating the political will for change that brings it about. Marching is a part of it, as is writing, calling and visiting those we elect to represent us in Congress.

And the persistence to continue to make our points until change comes. RESULTS (results.org) is famous among members of Congress for doing just that (though not well known among most people). A good example is their working to end the millions of preventable deaths of mothers and children in our world.

Already more than cut in half since 1990, the current bipartisan Reach Every Mother and Child Act encourages our part of this work to be more efficient. The 127 cosponsors in the House (54 Republicans, 73 Democrats), including the vast majority of our Washington delegation, believe saving lives is a good idea.

Still RESULTS volunteers persist, remembering over half of the House cosponsored it last year, but it didn’t pass. So Rep. Reichert reintroduced it this year.

Lives depend on it so advocates persist. So while peaceful marching helps, it is the persistent communication with those who represent us that usually creates the political will for change.
