Plan ahead for holiday weekend traffic

Officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation are urging travelers headed out for the Memorial Day weekend to make their travel plans before they hit the road.

Though most state highway construction work is suspended through the holiday weekend — including Monday, May 28 — to ease congestion, the Memorial Day weekend will still have summer-level traffic on state roadways.

Washington State Ferries is anticipating heavy ferry traffic for the holiday.

Peak travel times on most routes are expected to be westbound Thursday, May 24 and Friday, May 25, and eastbound, Monday, May 28.

Check the WSF website at www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/, or call toll-free 888-808-7977, for details.

WSF notes that customers can also bypass vehicle lines by traveling as a walk-on passenger.

To help with holiday travel plans, WSDOT recommends:

• Checking the WDOT’s best times to travel charts to help plan your trip and avoid congestion;

• Geting informed about WSDOT’s online tools, including the WSDOT mobile app, traffic cameras and email alerts;

• Visiting online traveler information for traffic, weather and ferry schedules;

• Calling 5-1-1 for updated road conditions; and

• Allowing extra time for travel during the holidays to avoid rushing or distraction.
