To the editor:

Imagine Winslow with less traffic and healthier residents of all ages because they feel safe using their feet for everyday transportation, not just recreation.

The city’s multi-modal transportation advisory committee has been working on a plan for safer walking, biking and wheelchair use for several years with the help of city engineers who share their vision — a vision clearly established by our community in our comprehensive plan.

The bridge across Highway 305 at Knechtel is a significant part of that plan. Transportation experts tell us that dividing two of our most populated areas with almost a mile long stretch of busy traffic makes no sense for a community that wants to promote more walking and biking and less car usage.

We plan and build for the future we want. Let’s support safe walking, biking and wheelchair use for all ages. The bridge can be used by all island residents and especially Winslow residents, including those who will occupy 140 new residences being built on the east side of 305. The ultimate question is: more cars or more walkers and bikers?
